Some tricks on passing the PMP Exam
59
#1 Study, Study Study…and then, Study some more
In order to pass the PMP exam, you really need to study and know the materials. Merely cramming the information will not serve you in your professional development as a project manager. Studies show that those who study information in smaller chunks have significantly higher recall on tests. Take your study materials with you while you are out doing errands and study portions while you are waiting. Learning the concepts and knowing example situations will help you remember the materials better. By knowing the material, you will be confident. Your confidence in knowing the material will allow you to relax and not panic when the test is given.
#2 Understand the basic concepts of PMI project management.
A successful Project Manager must simultaneously manage the four basic elements of a project. Each must be managed effectively in order to see a project through successfully to completion of all objectives. Mastery of each element is paramount to passing the PMP examination.
#3 Read & Know the PMBOK
The Project Management Book of Knowledge is the bible for PMP. When you become a member of PMI, you get the PMBOK on a CD. Many find the information given in the PMBK a bit dense and someone filled with jargon that is not easily understood. There are many companions available to the PMBOK. Do your research and find a book with a format that will satisfy your studying style. Remember, the PMP exam is based on the 4th edition of the PMBOK. Therefore, you must know the book inside and out.
#4 Practice, Practice, Practice!
The trite axiom of ‘practice makes perfect’ is very prescient in this situation. Merely knowing the material will not get you all the way unless you know how to apply your knowledge. Taking practice exams will help you see how the knowledge you absorbed from studying applies to the PMP exam. There are many practice exams available that offer a preview of what the PMP exam is like. Taking a practice exam should also help sooth any test day jitters. Familiarity with the subject matter and test format will build the confidence that will give you the edge in passing the PMP exam.
